American Folk Art and Maritime
Painting Restorations

In our installment this week, two oil paintings in need of cleaning and restoration. The first, above, is an an American folk-art style of unknown age or artist, was experiencing grime and yellowing. Cleaning removed the layer of grime and additional work on the aged varnish and some light retouching allowed more of the colors to come through upon final varnish. Shine was toned down with a matte finish depicting the original intent. The work was finished with a nested frame-within-a-frame design in gold finish, also toned down with a light opaque wash.

The second restoration in our post is a mid-century maritime oil-on-canvas in decent shape, that benefited from more vivid colors after cleaning and new varnish. It now shows handsomely in a dark, outer frame set off by a silver-gold nested frame inside.
