Marcus Stone Antique, Vintage Print & Custom Frame

Each week brings interesting projects to our shop – now at 131 Broad St., Claremont – and this project is no exception: A vintage print of a painting by English painter Marcus Stone (4 July 1840 – 24 March 1921). “His Ship In Sight” was first exhibited by the London Royal Academy of Arts (RA) in 1903. Founded in 1768, RA has a unique position to this day as an independent, privately funded institution led by eminent artists and architects. The image also appeared in The Illustrated London News, the world’s first illustrated weekly news magazine (1842- 2003), the most successful of its day. Marcus Stone was trained by his father and was supremely gifted, exhibiting at the London Royal Academy of Art before he was eighteen. He later illustrated, with much success, books by Charles Dickens, among other contemporaries of the day. His early work focused on historical events, with later compositions, like our feature here, depicting a type of “dainty sentiment, treated with much charm and skill”. Our frame design gives a nod to the elegance of the composition, and the period. Complete with beautiful, period-appropriate framework in gold, neutral colors that let the image stand out, and set off by a gold fillet – a small, decorative frame placed in the lining of a picture frame or in this case underneath a mat inside one, which helps draw the eye inwards to the artwork. As is our custom, all was mounted using archival materials for protection and longevity, and placed behind optically coated glazing for UV protection and to reduce glare. Gorgeous. Thank you! Vintage artwork of your own in need of attention? We’d love to help. Please contact us today, or stop by our NEW Claremont NH shop, now at 131 Broad St., Claremont. We’d love to see you!
