Custom Framing Antique Japanese Woodblock Prints

This week we were treated with the framing of several original Japanese woodblock prints from the 18th century. These beautiful pieces were gifted to their owner years ago by the family of a foreign exchange student who was staying with the family here in the U.S.

Japanese woodblock printing is a traditional form of printmaking that has been practiced in Japan for centuries.

The technique involves carving a design into a block of wood, applying ink to the surface, and then pressing the block onto paper to create a print. When different colors are applied to the print, its traditionally done by carving into a separate block for each color, and ink is then applied to the surface of each block.

The printer then aligns the paper with the first block and presses it onto the paper to create the first color. The paper is then set aside to dry, and the process is skillfully repeated with the next block and color. This is carefully repeated for each color in the design until the print is complete.

Japanese woodblock prints are known for their intricate details, vivid colors, and graceful lines, and they have influenced many artists around the world. In addition to their artistic value, Japanese woodblock prints also provide a valuable glimpse into the culture and history of Japan.

It’s worth noting that these pieces had experienced some water damage and were skillfully restored by our friends at Works On Paper in Bellows Falls, VT.

In our frame selection, a dimpled-finish design was selected for its details that complement and add interest to the pieces. The antiqued, gold lip of the frames help create a visual focal point that draws the eye towards the center of the artwork. All was mounted with archival materials including 100% cotton-rag board free from wood-pulp and acid, Japanese paper hinges and starch adhesive, and placed under UV-protected plexiglass to help prevent UV exposure, and moisture. Together, these elements will both showcase and safely display these beautiful images for years of enjoyment. Thank you!
