This Week at the Shop – We recently worked on a customized metal leaf frame for this beautiful, 50-inch plus original 1979 watercolor by Chinese artist, Chiu Weng. We haven’t uncovered much detail about Weng’s work, although many similarly styled paintings were produced by Weng in the late 1960s to late 1970s. Weng worked in watercolors and casein paint, often on cork paper. Casein is an ancient type of milk-based, water-soluble, opaque paint, that is visually similar to oil paint and is sometimes used with techniques that add texture and depth to the images – evident in the beautifully composed and impeccably detailed image before us. Our work involved customizing a metal-leaf frame with a pigmented wash that toned down the bright gold of the original frame and added complementary color that helps the eye toward the art. Immediately surrounding the artwork, we placed a gold fillet, and all is mounted on archival, cotton-based materials free of properties that cause yellowing with age. Generous spacing in the mat design helps the art stand out on its own. All was placed under UV-protected, anti-reflective glass.
