19th Century Oil Painting Restoration

This week we turn our attention to a beautiful 19th-century oil painting brought to us for cleaning and restoration. The work was created by Wilhelm Alexander Meyerheim, a german artist (1815–1882) born in Danzig, Germany (now Gdansk, Poland), into a family of extremely talented and successful artists. His father, a talented house painter who did portraits, gave him his initial training. This experience, along with local study in Danzig, compelled him to continue formal education at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin. Meyerheim became a popular painter of scenes of everyday outdoor life – simple activities which included children and horses – his favorite subjects – silhouetted against the sky.
Our featured painting arrived in a gorgeous antique frame of the same period. In our image of the work, you can see a cleaning demarcation line on the inset image of the canvas, showing the delicate work-in-progress removing layers of varnish and grime collected over many years. Cleaning and restoration brought this beautiful painting back to life, providing years of enjoyment for its new owner. Thank you!
