Every week brings with it interesting work, and every project has a story. This week, a memento of travel to distant lands in another time. Our feature is of a hand-weaved cloth – a table cloth, actually – of the Yampara culture, acquired during a trip to the Tarabucu Market of Bolivia. Tarabucu, located in south-central Bolivia, is best known as the home of the Yampara culture – a social-political group spanning across a number of towns and established long before the Spanish colonization of the region. They’re traditionally a weaving community with a proud heritage, which manifests itself in their wearing of colorful traditional clothing. Each Sunday, a vibrant open-air market is held, bustling with color – both in the shades you can see, and the kind you can experience from the local characters. It’s the main event of the weekend for locals – vital for their incomes, and the place for families to make most of their purchases for the week. Visitors near and far are attracted to the hundreds of stalls lining the streets. Our feature this week is an original, hand-weaved table cloth acquired in during a trip to Tarabucu in the eighties, and stored away. Our work involved mounting this beautiful piece on archival materials, behind optically treated plexiglass for longevity and UV protection, and secured within a beautiful, finished-corner frame designed to complement the work. Carvings on the frame give a nod toward hand-carved art common in that region. The design will provide its owner with a long-lasting, visual reminder of a wonderful trip long passed. Thank you!
